Resetting Without Starting Over
If August & September feel like a whirlwind right now, you are in good company.
Between back-to-school transitions, shifting family schedules, and the lingering fatigue of a busy summer, this time of year often triggers a familiar, urgent thought: “I need to get my life together. I need a total reset.”
I’m right there with you.
When we hit September, the instinct is often to go all-in. We start searching for 30-day cleanses, strict meal plans, or grueling workout routines to "get back on track."
It’s taken me a few years to figure this out, but here is the problem with that approach: Total overhauls require a massive amount of energy—energy you likely do not have to spare right now.
When we treat September like a total life overhaul, we fall right into the all-or-nothing trap. We try to fix our diet, workouts, sleep, and morning routines all in the same week. By week three, real-life chaos intervenes, burnout sets in, and we feel like we’ve failed before fall has even officially begun.
It’s no different than when we set out to “overhaul” our nutrition and eating habits. When we try to do too much at once, we fail more often than we succeed.
This year, what if we didn't press the emergency reset button? What if, instead of starting from scratch, we simply anchored back into what actually supports our bodies?
The Power of the "Micro-Reset"
Resetting without starting over is about choosing 1 to 2 small, non-negotiable anchors that protect your nervous system and support your blood sugar. These aren't rigid rules; they are baseline acts of self-care that create immediate stability, even when the schedule around you is unpredictable.
If you are feeling overwhelmed this week, pick one of these micro-resets to focus on:
1. Protect Your Morning Cortisol & Blood Sugar
Before rushing into carpool or opening your email inbox on an empty stomach, prioritize at least a little bit of protein. I know the general message lately is 30g of protein at breakfast, and I don’t disagree. However, if we’re micro-resetting, even 15g can be beneficial without feeling like you have to overhaul your morning routine. Skipping breakfast entirely or relying solely on caffeine when you're already stressed spikes cortisol and sets you up for mid-afternoon energy crashes and intense sugar cravings. A steady morning blood sugar curve is the ultimate gift to your nervous system.
(But here’s the catch: if you start with 15g, find somewhere within the hour to get another 15-20g. Maybe it’s a yogurt bowl at your desk once the kids are dropped off, or a smoothie you can sip in the car. We’re not aiming for perfection, just improvement.)
2. Practice "Micro-Breaks" for Nervous System Regulation
You don't need a 45-minute meditation session to lower your stress levels. Throughout the day, practice 2-minute "pattern interrupters." Step outside for direct sunlight, do four slow, deep belly breaths, or take 60 seconds to stretch your shoulders away from your ears between tasks. These brief moments signal to your brain that you are safe, down-regulating stress hormones before the evening rush.
3. Focus on Evening Down-Regulation
When life gets busy, our sleep is often the first thing to go. Instead of overthinking your entire night routine, pick one physical cue to signal to your body that the workday is done. Swapping late-night screen time for a warm bath with magnesium flakes or pure Epsom salts is a simple, non-supplement strategy that soothes sore muscles, promotes relaxation, and helps lower nighttime cortisol for deeper sleep.
You Don't Need a New Routine—Just Sustainable Anchors
Health is not built through short-term perfection; it is built through steady, compassionate consistency. You don't need a complex protocol to feel good this fall. You just need simple, supportive habits that honor the season of life you are currently in.
Take a deep breath, pick one small anchor for this week, and give yourself permission to ease into the season.
